Dry Socket Post Op Instruction

DRY SOCKET - TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

What to do when you develop dry socket post-extraction

WHAT IS IT?

  • Dry socket occurs when the clot that covers the extraction site dislodges itself and exposes the area to bacteria, causing infection.
  • The clot is necessary to protect the socket, stop bleeding, promote the development of new bone and gum tissues, and prevent pain.
  • If the clot is lost prematurely, the inflamed socket and underlying nerves and bone are exposed.

SYMPTOMS

  • Pain and severe throbbing that don’t respond to normal pain medications.
  • Radiating pain through jaw and ear.
  • Odd smell or taste in your mouth.

DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT

  • If you are experiencing symptoms, you will need to return to the office for treatment.
  • We will gently rinse the socket with medicated solution.
  • We may pack the site with gauze dressing that contains antiseptic, which may require multiple visits to monitor treatment.
  • Prompt diagnosis and treatment will allow the clot to fill back in and begin the healing process.

CAUSE & PREVENTION

  • Follow your extraction homecare instructions exactly.
  • Avoid behaviors that would encourage premature loss of the clot, especially in the first 24 hours.
  • Don’t touch the extraction site with your fingers or tongue.
  • Don’t rinse the area for the first 24 hours.
  • Don’t use tobacco.
  • Don’t suck on candy.
  • Don’t drink through a straw.
  • Don’t drink carbonated, alcoholic or hot beverages.
