Both crowns and bridges are permanent restorations. However, we use crowns to protect and strengthen teeth that have been treated with root canal therapy, while we use bridges to replace missing teeth.
A crown is a covering that encases the entire tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function.
There are several different types of crowns and bridges, and these include:
- Full porcelain - this crown is fabricated of extremely strong porcelain and is tooth colored.
At your appointment, your dentist will examine the teeth and prepare the teeth for crowns or bridges. This involves removing portions of enamel to create room for the crown or bridge. The dentist will then take impressions of the teeth to provide an exact mold for the crown or bridge.
